Ah, this makes sense. So in SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays, you don't get enough of a good look at them with all the particle effects and cropped cut-ins, but all the cockpits are 3D modeled and exported as really high res sprites. A seated shadow is baked in too.

i drew it in a big canvas, so the actual size was like, 600 x 800 lmaoo, so i copied it into a bigger canvas (2000px x 2000px) n made smart smoothing strong (thanks csp) so if it looks a lil funky then thats y (2nd pic is cropped from the orig canvas)
