Like always, the best way to approach this is to look at drawings similar to what you’re going for in a particular piece or even just photos of actual places. Practice makes perfect. Of course, backgrounds that are just patterns rather than actual scenery are also an option:

this story definitely went with the less typical route, but the ending was def one that fits their stories the best. they got what they truly wanted and i’m very happy for them! of course, it’s sad that mother & son are apart, but they will always have the other in their heart 💛

On the topic of making things easier to recognize at a distance; eyes. The glowing green eyes contrasted by the red round glasses make it another feature to look out for. The glow is more visible at night ofcourse, this is to emulate animal eyes to help see in the darkness.
