I make a lot of charcaters based on deviance, opposites or being the unexpected

Cute soft characters with big absurd weapons, anti-heroes and scappy or small characters fighting big battles

You can cheat things. What some shows will do for characters that don't have "realistic" eyes is enlarge the eyeball and aim it out.

Here's an example of it on the Hawkgirl model I did ages ago.
If the pupil of the eye is "centered' within the lids, it'll fool everyone.
