This always stands out to me from the comics. Knuckles willing gets infected so he can fight off zombots to give Sonic more time to save everyone. He sacrifices himself for the greater good. That's a friend that you don't get often.

and just to expand on that, aside from knuckles' honesty and heart, I feel sonic also just admires knuckles' ability to change so transparently and sincerely—acknowledging one's own mistakes. it's not everyday a hero like sonic comes across a person (once enemy) like knuckles.
