Gaussian blur, noise filter and gradient overlays are your friends for quick backgrounds! Nothing in the background has to be perfect, just block it in and add extra details as needed. ✌️ (Now onto shading the character!)

A game that uses this really well is Roki, they have a really good post somewhere about being able to swap out gradient maps to change mood real easy. I had trouble choosing a mood myself! These were made by just adding overlays to the existing gradients. Neat!
