I dunno if anyone else does this but I usually paint a pretty saturated layer as my first pass and then add an overall tinted grey. I would then start building contrast and add spotlights of saturation to finish the piece. This one is on its way to the final stage

LEGO Atomix from Ben 10, tried to keep it as minifig scaled as possible. Once again, the head is a bit off and I couldn't find the clear lime 1x1 cone piece. Otherwise, yeah! Happy with it.

216: Back in school, one of the things I liked using in with my pieces was light and reflections off floors. I'm kinda bringing some of that back now. But I just enjoy the way you can really exaggerate the qualities of light even in a fairly monochromatic piece.
