I've discovered that Akira Toriyama wore a Pennzoil hat on his vacation to Bali. He drew Master Rōshi wearing this same hat on the title page of Dragon Ball Chapter 33. This strengthens the argument that Rōshi is Toriyama's proxy. See more insights here:
