This is why it bothers me when artists get shit for lightening skin slightly in bright light. Obv actual whitewashing happens A LOT but I've seen people colour pick the tone from the original like "See yours is lighter!" eg.

They are not racists, if they draw as they like. They do not whitewash someone, they draw in the range that they like
Take for example a white character from an anime. The artist painted it much yellower than it actually is. Is he a racist to whites? (artist @ Worvies)

case in point, the dumb controversy around this piece by gomigomipomi. the original piece (1) is very nice, but someone accused her of whitewashing for no reason (2) and "fixed" her art (3). gomi was very polite and explained why it was colored as such (4), which was nice of her.
