I won't mend words: should have had more work put into it. Both level design and visuals are sub-standard and game mechanics feel stiff. I respect any creative project and can tell there's an honest effort, but I'd rather the developers rethink their approach.

Agreed. And Axer's characters sometimes looked stiff.
