It's probably due to how he's drawn in that image. Most Sonic artwork has his brow much closer to his nose, not to mention they make sure not to have the pupils at the side of his head in those profile shots, so it looks more normal.

An interesting step I'd forgotten- I blocked out the colours I wanted to use to experiment until they were composed nicely around the image. Some choices were more or less fixed like Luffy = red etc. so I was mostly swapping the more flexible ones like Chopper to settle on 3rd 👇

Another update! I got a bunch of really cool artist feedback so I went back and did a bunch of revamping on this one. It's still got numerous issues but I think it's an overall better image.
