Saw this type of rationalization a lot during the BND days.
It's a sad sign when you end up dismissing the storytelling process as a whole rather than just acknowledge a piece of a story was poorly written.
If you haven't already, I recommend reading The Girl From The Other Side. It's a beautifully illustrated story that touches on themes of love, hope, sadness, lying and religion, all done in a very respectful and well written manner.
