That's just the base. Each panel is a separate layer, and over each one, I add texture and then detailing and highlights, like I did on the lower part and the cannon arm of the mecha.
It's a long process, but as you see, it's a very practical way to paint a mechanical object!

That's... ...not how clipping works. Unless the legs are modelled in a weird way to have bumps evenly spaced out, that's textured ripped jeans. Clipping would work more like this.
