i added the white highlights in procreate. rest is traditional watercolor!

It depends if I'm working with inked work or not.

If the work is inked, I tend to fill in areas with the lightest color and then add shadows (image left)

If the work isn't inked, I tend to start with the darker colors and then add highlights (image right)
