Perhaps a controversial opinion but it's one I stick to, the best X-Men comic in the 90s was X-Men 2099 by John Francis Moore, Ron Lim, and Jan Duursema. It's 35 issues(and two specials) of solid character growth that outside one issue could survive without the X-Men name.

A few pages from an old draft of August: Purgatory Underground- originally my two main characters started out a lot more antagonistic. I had to take the story down to 4 issues, and while a lot got taken out I think the way it focused on the main story was a positive, overall.
