This is what I mean by hand-drawn btw. I remember even being impressed that each game gave Mario and Luigi slightly different color palettes based off the artwork and sprites of the original games.

Perhaps one of the biggest changes to the hack (aside from the new levels obviously) is that the color palettes of certain areas have been toned down significantly to not be so painful to look at. Looking at you, demo's bright yellow desert.

Toying with the Sprite Lamp example in Unity with a Super Mario World palette to test an idea. I've hardly seen anyone actually try "real time" sprite lighting with such limited palettes, and I am SO tempted to be the first… but any artists I'd hire would hate me
