Not a ref but as an example this is what i’d do. I’d show them both pictures so they get an idea of what my shading does to the character design, because it does change the general color and feel of the oc after shading.

OK! base color, add a multiply layer and put the base color to the top and bottom. add a color dodge layer with the base color to the highlight & under the hair. add another mult and add some finer shading. details (defining highlights & adding overlay layers) :3
