I Am Half-Sick of Shadows, Said the Lady of Shalott (1915) by J.W. Waterhouse (GB, 1849–1917). Pre-Raphaelite style. A scene from the Tennyson poem, Lady of Shalott. Lancelot's reflection is about to appear in the mirror. Note the lovers & also the shuttles that look like boats.

Come into the garden, Maud,
For the black bat, night, has flown,
Come into the garden, Maud,
I am here at the gate alone;
And the woodbine spices are wafted abroad,
And the musk of the rose is blown.

-Alfred, Lord Tennyson

(2/2) last made up my mind to take the liberty of calling. Only Mrs. Tennyson was at home...I was most kindly received, and spent nearly an hour there. I saw also the two children, Hallam and Lionel, 5 and 3 years old, the most beautiful boys of their age I ever saw.

In 1890 an 81-yr-old Alfred, Lord Tennyson showed Bram Stoker around his garden, and specifically pointed out 'some blue flowering pea which had been reared from seed found in the hand of a mummy'. I think the plant is likely the saucily-named Clitoria ternatea🌺

"I hold it true, whate’er befall;
I feel it when I sorrow most;
‘Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all."
From: "In Memoriam A.H.H."
-- by English poet Alfred, Lord born today in Somersby, Lincolnshire (1809-1892).
