Julie was a common sketch subject during my high school years as well. Once I started drawing with GIMP, Julie naturally became a subject I wanted to try drawing in that capacity. My first attempts weren't great but hey, growing pains and all that.

Julie's characterization as being an adventurous but naive everygirl who just wants to make friends and be a dancer came in pretty early too, as I had wanted to make a Dancer Lord before other projects would attempt likewise. It helped solidify her design for years to come.
