I joked about it, but in terms of fighting games of the decade I feel like there are three to highlight: Ultra SFIV, Tekken 7, and Guilty Gear Xrd. These games either helped push the genre back into the mainstream or even evolved the tech behind how fighting games were made.
compare and contrast with Konami's Xexex, another shmup that came out around the same time with similarly impressive visual effects, though this time used to create beautiful yet bizarre and alien landscapes.
I always love it when older games pushed the boundaries of 2D tech!
