Some exceptions: Peg-Leg Pete is a cat. Horace and Clarabelle are a horse and cow. But basically outside of mice and ducks, everyone else is a humanoid-dog thing. They had to take the simplistic 1920s Mickey cartoons filled with barnyard animals and put some sense of logic to it.
