I absolutely recommend reading The Brutal Confessions of a Homicide Investigator aka Satsujin Kansatsukan no Kokuhaku. Beware though, it's bloody, it's gruesome, there's a lot of uncomfortable topics in it. Still, it's a great read and the MC is quite likeable.
