The tradition of the shooting of the POPINJAY - the parrot-shaped target was originally used for archery practise, but by the time of Sir Walter Scott's "Old Mortality" the bow had given way to the musket!

Such an competition was brought to life by Sir Walter Scott in his novel of the Covenanting times "Old Mortality", based on a real event which took place at Dalserf, where James Somerville of Cambusnethan won. Based on this we feel Cambusnethan can claim the Popinjay symbol!
