Sonic’06 was originally planned to be a reboot of Modern Sonic that Yuji Naka wanted to implement. Sonic Team at the time wanted to take Sonic in a different direction from Heroes & Shadow the Hedgehog to keep Sonic relevant.

I actually think the idea of a ...reboot?? (???) of Final Fantasy I is actually pretty gnarly, however I gotta question some of the design choices made... like cmon SQEX you kept Garland's design but not Wol's? You even had several variants to pick from!

The reboot was sloppy b/c:
Sonic Team’s games aren’t the Freedom Fighters’ stories.
There were continuity inconsistencies.
In-game events from Unleashed were ignored.
Amy was eventually written out of the story she’s canon to.
