A lot of male turtles' plastrons IRL are concave while female turtles' plastrons are either flat or round.

I can only guess when picking out which species each turtle should be that and probably came across this tidbit, which inspired the design.

(I'm not really good explaining) also one of the ways to bring more shape to the coloring is using different brushes such as hard, soft and even an airbrush to find middle tones. Also some times it can take a lot of color picking
