I actually didn't notice that! I made different variations because I didn't know if I wanted to settle on shading or not so it looks like I used the wrong version - this would be the actual final version of the last comparison:

Here's a quick trick that I use to make colours look a bit nicer! I add a new layer, set it to hard light and at 30% opacity, and colour over it with the image colour that fits the character!
