中央の位置を守る霊獣とも。

千里の道を駆け巡り、水の上も沈まず走り抜ける力を持つ。 西遊記で三蔵法師が乗っていた馬が、龍馬だったという話も。

お尻の穴が無いことから、金を貯める・守ることに繋がり縁起が良いとされ、四霊獣と並ぶ瑞獣とも。 元々は邪悪を避けると言われ、門に祀られたり、三国時代には戦旗などに描かれていた。
