'Atmospheric perspective' is the influence of the atmosphere on distance.

Put simply, closer objects have higher contrast. Darker darks. Lighter lights.

For this background, the buildup process is easily noticeable because of color stacking. More darker colors on top of lighter colors layers imply more weight, and bigger drawings imply closer range. Use the two to imply distance. Some clouds made it and others not so much.

Like, this isn't good but this is usually how I approach trees from a small distance. I work dark-to-light, and I'll usually add lighter and lighter shades as I get to the top, and then make the outline lighter towards the top as well
