It's also in his body language. When I look at his panels, I imagine he'd be a joy to animate. He looks really bouncy and flexible and full of energy! But the anime...really didn't wanna deal with that, clearly. Even looking at stills, his poses are just...much less dynamic

His new design really doesn't reflect his character at all, he now looks completely bland. "Cute guy" and that's it. His older design obviously isn't as conventionally attractive but it has just so much more appeal in my eyes and shows "gruff shy character" clearly.
