Mallow didn't originally have those two massive teeth you see here; her smile used to be much smaller. I changed it cause it made her look more dopey and lovable!

But for something like that you can make other parts smaller to have more space to work in the main part of a sprite, like a pickaxe.

You can change the perspective to make more space, making the cable of the pickaxe occuping less space

(a poorly made example 😅)

Making slow smoke is hard.

Tip: think in balls rolling into themselves and making themselves bigger and smaller from bottom to top and inside and out.
Think in spirals, is at least the way I think about it, EVERY natural thing moves in curves and spirals
