As for island survival games then & now, it's been better.
We might never see a new Survival Kids or Lost in Blue, given Konami's business priorities. Anime-themed survival games aside, I've heard mixed things about Western efforts like Stranded Deep too. The genre seems cursed.
The island & islanders are themselves derived from the Australian maritime perimeter, loosely adapted as they are. KSS wasn't afraid to spice things up with some dungeon-crawling & a couple very strange endings, including a bad one you only get if you stay on the island too long.
The main game loop now revolves around replenishing supplies, acquiring as many tools & shop upgrades as you can, managing character needs, & building up your tech level. After getting blueprints, you can finally build a (satellite) radio or vehicle to try & escape the island!
Thankfully you're not alone! Explore long & wide enough and you'll have a motley crew of survivors from the same plane. The island has other inhabitants, too—some indigenous, others stranded for much longer. And remember, helpful as these friends are, they have their own needs!
