The Great Stink of 1858 in London occurred when hot weather exacerbated the smell of untreated human waste and industrial effluent that was present on the banks of The Thames River. Between 1830-1860, c. 40,000 people died from cholera that was associated with river pollution.

The Irishman left for London in 1827 & entered the RA School in 1828. He exhibited at the RA in 1829. By the 1830s his work was gathering attention. First Steps (1829), Self-Portrait (1829) & Dionysius Lardner (1830s)

He completed a number of portraits in the mid 1830s including of himself in nature. Extreme poverty overtook him by 1838 & he died ignored by the art community that once feted him. To see his work best visit the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin
