one thing i really like is that the old guard crew of jill/jasmine/the doctor are like. frankly a bit older than anime likes to make girls? like the protag crew are all kids but the show doesn't go SUPER hard on the jill team as being old, just kinda jaded n in powerful positions

The interesting thing about these allegiances is the respective positions of the two groups.
The Shinigami are the group that committed the original sin. They chopped up the Soul King and used his body as a centrepiece holding together an imperfect world.
