Scanners should be picking up colours. I used to use a scanner all the time! (The images below being examples). I can try to find the brand of scanner I used if you'd like! Not sure if this is the quality you're after tho

It came out looking a lot more blotchy (particularly the skin) than it does in reality. My scanner seems to do that. So I smoothed over some areas with a wet brush. Here is the result.
