these have 4 colors per sprite, and the larger scale dynamics are hand painted tile by tile using palette swaps.

there is a sort of balance which i am trying to work out between freer color work (above) and strictly brightening / darkening within the same 4 color palette.

This is the third time I've updated my original Sonic sprite, and I'm quite happy with the results! Definitely more better than my first attempt at a custom Sonic styled sprite. I may plan on trying my hand at spriting Tails, Knuckles, and Amy whenever I get the motivation.

The Brothers Bear from Donkey Kong Country 3 do not exist as distinct sprites in the game's data. Instead, every bear is created by taking a generic "base bear" sprite, recoloring it, then superimposing details specific to that bear on it to save space on the cartridge.

One approach to get a lot of mileage from limited palettes like the palette is to make mini-palettes for each sprite, so that if you half-close your eyes, color blobs are distinct from background. It's like blending/ dithering, just not ordered ▒

Drawcia is such a unique villain that deserved a much better game, hopefully we can see her shine someday again!

the whole time i drew the outfit for my talk sprite, i couldn't help but replay in my head:

but on a less cringy note -- red scarf? gone. my character used the fabric to make her sunglasses & dress!!
