That is a very good point though. I hide my art signature in between complicated lineart I also make it the line Art Color.

My favorite watermark method is to keep the signature off the drawing but put the flare on the drawing. Sure you can still crop it off (and this is a bad example but its the only one i got) but you'll be cropping off a lot of the drawing.

if you make the signature almost blend in the background color but be visible enough to be seen if looked closely it would still work. Like my friends piece here; the signature is above the back. It doesnt ruin the piece
