Here’s a bit of my process:
I always get started with a really rough sketch and refine it then, just as it is in the first pic, then I go to the line art (pic 2), add colors with shadows and lights (pic 3), last but not least, I add some final effects and refinements (pic 4)
Been playing with how to represent muddy ground.
Tried multiple brushes, brush strokes, and colors.
This is where I ended up and - to my mind - it looks like rough ground.

Muted-64 by Helixei is the last of the first 16 #RejectedPalettes added to @SpriterGors and @ckelsallpxls's site without an example - Until now, anyway.
M-64, despite lacking any sort of black/white, does superb with shadows and highlights and is a great all-rounder!
