No idea if I'm the first to discover this but interestingly enough Susie's DW sprite uses a slightly greener shade of black similar to Sonic 3's "blacks". If I'm not mistaken the greens are supposed to be the same. (I got this @ Spriters Resource and they used black for outlines)

I think if you observe well Bosmaus's style, he uses sometimes very contradicting (light, bright, colourfull) colours in those dark scenes. Eg the last dance or the great escape
