A view of life below deck in a warship, by George Cruikshank
The verse at the bottom reads
“A cavern lies, unknown to cheering day
Where one small taper lends a feeble ray
Where wild disorder holds her wanton reign
And careless mortals frolic in her train.”

#FolkloreThursday While early medieval accounts portrayed the Wild Hunt as demonic, later romances imagined it as a host of fairies. English leaders of the Hunt included King Arthur, Herne the Hunter, and King Herla https://t.co/hoMcZLnQmW

'The fairies are dancing — how nimbly they bound!
They flit o'er the grass tops, they touch not the ground;
Their kirtles of green are with diamonds bedight,
All glittering and sparkling beneath the moonlight.'
-Mrs. G. G. Richardson

Old Blucher beating the Corsican big drum.
Bottom humour on full display in this 1814 caricature by George Cruikshank. A similar one of Wellington and Blucher flogging Napoleon's bare buttocks was produced in 1815.
I love these storytelling scenes: SJ Guy’s “The Story of Golden Locks” c. 1870, & the original frontispieces for the British editions of the Grimms’ fairy tales, c. 1820s, & illustrated by the great George Cruikshank. I love the coziness. ☺️📚💫 #FolkloreThursday @FolkloreThurs
The whole mid-late 2000s genre of “annoying meme character” has died out a long time ago which is why you only see stuff like Crazy Frog or Gummy Bear through nostalgia.
Even Lucas Cruikshank knew Fred was running his course and it’s a shame Daneboe hasn’t moved on either.
