For me it all boils down to how it’s presented, and the context. If it’s realistic gore or cartoon. An example from my webtoon. It’s a severed head but the context is comical so it’s not the same as a like some innocent person being murdered. It’s all about context.

"Wearing of the Grin" (1951) is a strange Chuck Jones cartoon. Through no fault of his own, Porky gets physically and psychologically tortured in a Dali-esque nightmare by leprechauns. Maybe Chuck was afraid of leprechauns?
