this is your reminder that Victor Von Doom is a Romani man. his identity as a Rom plays a fundamental part in who he becomes and what his motives as Doctor Doom and the Monarch of Latveria are. the persecution he faced for being Romani largely shaped who he is as a person.
some people even use this excuse in a much more outrageous way, claiming that since they often have pale skin in the comics, all Roma in real life are pale, white people, and do not in fact face racism, which is dismissive of the reality many Roma face, even still today.
some lesser used panels which depict Wanda and Pietro with darker skin tones (Pietro is however stated to be lighter than Wanda), as they often fall victim to colourism from uneducated artists, which is, for some reason, used to insist the twins are white.
the issue shows how their biological parents were Magda and Magneto, but were raised by Django and Marya, a Romani couple. we are also shown just some of the discrimination and racism the twins faced simply for being Romani, which plays a huge part in who they are as characters.
a panel from Avengers (1963) #234, where the twins' Romani heritage is explicitly shown as Wanda explains her history & how she came to be where she is. the word G*psy is used here as this issue was released in 1983, when the name Romani was hardly used by gadje to refer to us.
Vision and Scarlet Witch #4, released early 1983, revealed that Magneto is the true father of both Wanda and Pietro, and that their mother is Magda - a Romani woman he met in a concentration camp during the Holocaust.
now let's move onto Wanda and Pietro, and firstly start with their Jewish and Romani roots in the comics, since too many people refuse to believe they were ever there.
a thread discussing MCU Wanda & Pietro, whitewashing / ethnic erasure, the MCUs recurring problem with anti-Roma sentiment, Elizabeth Olsen's usage of the G-slur, and more - from an actual person of Romani descent, because i am Tired.
