While the sign says "To the N. Pole", for polar bears, that's not great habitat. Some bears wander to 90 N but not many do & there are precious few seals to hunt there.
Hot weather in Churchill should be enough to melt the last of the sea ice in Hudson Bay & move the rest of the #polarbears ashore. The density of bears on these last bits of ice must be extremely high!
#Svalbard sea ice is now only at its 4th lowest area on record for this date. For pregnant #polarbears living near there, they've pretty much lost the option of breeding in the main SE denning areas: Kong Karls Land, Edgeøya, Barentsøya, & Hopen. It's unknown where they may go.
Almost a cause for celebration: Svalbard sea ice today is only at 2nd lowest level on record (no longer at a record low). Unfortunately for #polarbears, there's no ice near land so options for hunting will be minimal. As bear habitat, both ice cover & distribution matter.
Lowest #seaice area for this date at #Svalbard since 1967 (start of records). Ice covers 172,832 sq km & is 163,465 sq km below the 1981-2010 average. No ice reaching Svalbard means pregnant #polarbears can't reach the main denning areas on land. Bodes poorly for bears there.
Svalbard at 2nd lowest sea ice on record: troubling trend & ice should be near maximum. Svalbard group of #polarbears severely challenged.
Hudson Bay tracked #polarbears slowly moving offshore: clumped in west. Late freeze impact evident next year: low cub survival likely.
Anyone see a difference? Here's where our satellite tracked female #polarbears were in December 8, 2014 and today.
Almost no sea ice near Svalbard. Female #polarbears needed to reach denning areas weeks ago: not possible this year.
