Catharine Garmany, who won the Annie Jump Cannon Award in 1976, specializes in the study of O- and B-type stars, which are very large, very hot, and eventually explode into supernovas. She credits the award as being an important achievement in her career.
Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin was the first person to win the Annie Jump Cannon Award in 1934. In her doctoral thesis, Payne-Gaposchkin proposed that the sun and stars were made up of different elements than the earth, an idea which was not popular in the 1920’s.
