The 15th Amendment was ratified #OnThisDay in 1870 when Iowa approved the measure. It promised all men, regardless of race, the right to vote. That promise was not kept for many, many years, and voting access remains an issue today.

John Nicolay, indispensable assistant to #AbrahamLincoln, was born in Bavaria #OnThisDay in 1832. After Lincoln's death, he was a diplomat, marshal for the US Supreme Court and newspaper editor. He co-authored a massive Lincoln biography.
