Can't say I was ever disappointed by a character... well, except for one.
(4) Crash (Activision's Crash Bandicoot)
A huge all-star, Crash is probably the most iconic PS1 character, rivaling both Mario and Sonic back in the day. I see him combining the rushdown style of Sonic with the wackiness of Wario, with TNT and a Wumpa bazooka added in for fun.
(2) Bandanna Waddle Dee (Kirby)
Rounding out the main Kirby cast, having a spear fighter (plus additional attacks using parasol and maybe beam) is already enough merit. Plus I need more "cute" characters to beat people up with.
(1) Skull Kid (TLoZ: Majora's Mask)
Smash has no true dark magic users (Ganon doesn't count), and Hyrule Warriors proved to me Skull Kid would be an amazing option. Fairies, puppets, trumpets, the mask's abilities, and so on all provide a unique move kit.
