Following Napoleonic subordination of the #Swiss Confederation, the treaty of 1803 mandated the cantons provide 16,000 soldiers for La Grande Armée. This was to be organized into four regiments of 4000 men, each with four battalions (1x grenadier coy and 8x eightfusilier coy).
On 2 July 1866, Helmuth von Moltke ordered the 1st and Elbe Armies to send out scouts to establish where the Austrians had retreated. He assumed they would cross to the east bank of the Elbe, and defend a position that ran between the fortresses of #Königgrätz and Josephstadt.
