Petrels were also nicknamed 'Mother Carey's chickens': she was a fearsome sea-witch, the partner of Davy Jones, she would conjur storms so they could feast on the flesh of the drowned. Sighting petrels meant a storm to come. The more birds, the worse the storm. @FolkloreThurs
