She’s also got that telltale rhythm, of setting up a stock horror/action/fantasy moment and then undermining it with a joke.

I particularly like the thread of her being the kind of person who looks for practical technical solutions before softer human ones – it seems like this series is building a supporting cast around Riri to remind her about the importance of the latter.

Kieron Gillen remains uniquely good at observing and expressing our darker moments. This is relatable, in the most unflattering way.

Then we get the pitches for each character class. It's yummy fantasy world building *and* catnip for anyone looking forward to the accompanying RPG.

The first thing it does is set up the overarching conflict. Their friend brought them here and now he's the big bad. Beat him, convince him (or, more likely, 'convince' him) and they can all go home.

But most importantly, Runaways (2017–) features probably the single best comics panel of all time. It will live in my reaction image folder for years to come. So, thanks for that, @RainbowRowell, @KristaferAnka & @COLORnMATT.

At the same time, it's a comic about not being held back by the past. Both of the main villains so far, this was their main flaw. It's a neat extrapolation of the themes of the original Runaways, and especially interesting for a comic about resurrecting* old beloved characters.

Between Rowell's groundwork with the characters, and how Anka sells the moment, some of the best kisses in the business. Enough romance to make a bitter old man like me swoon.
