The Wrekin Iron Age Hillfort, likely capital of the Cornovii tribe, thought taken by #Roman force c. AD48-50 then abandoned. It is unusual with two separate enclosures. The outer & inner NE entrances are named Hell Gate & Heaven Gate respectively #HillfortsWednesday #Shropshire
My new favourite #Roman artefact is this miniature amulet in the shape of a gladiator helmet at the London Mithraeum Bloomberg SPACE (left). Carved from Baltic amber, AD43-170. Romans believed amber had healing powers. It may have been worn as a pendant. Large pic from info panel
The @VindolandaTrust writing tablets include a birthday inviation from Claudia Severa to Sulpicia Lepidina, earliest known example of writing in Latin by a woman, and a four page tablet written by Octavius who says ‘the roads are awful’ not much has changed in 2,000 years then!
