#OTD in 1888, Sir Ivan Magill was born in Larne, Ireland. He is best known as a pioneer of endotracheal anaesthesia. His name lives on in his forceps, tubes and circuits used by anaesthetists. Cheers to Ivan!

In c. 600 BC one of India's earliest documented surgeons, Sushruta, used cannabis vapors to sedate surgical patients. Over ensuing centuries, other herbs like aconitum would supplement that sedation in India and eventually in China.

in 1829 Jules Cloquet amputated a breast from a woman asleep under hypnosis. Recent experiments have suggested that hypnosis can raise pain thresholds up to the level of surgical anaesthesia in some patients. It is also good for managing anxiety and needle phobias.
