Yona of the Dawn
22 vols (EN) 31 vols (JP) - ongoing
Imo one of the best shojo of all time - a fantasy epic that nonetheless doesn't forget its shojo roots and the emotional richness of its cast. Has some of my absolute favourite best boys and girls in manga
Dragon Ball
42 vols - complete
The manga that launched the ongoing huge shonen franchise, but imo the manga is still the best jumping on point. I especially love the first half but the entire series has great art, creativity and charm to spare
OreGairu
9 vols (EN) 14 vols - complete in Japanese
This series sets out to give a more realistic take on the rom com formula, and while it can be slow at points, when it hits it hits HARD as all hell
That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime novels
7 vols (EN) 16 vols (JP) - ongoing
Imo the best traditional Isekai ever - I absolutely love everything about this, but especially the worldbuilding, socio-political commentary and just the amount of detail put into the story
Re Zero novels
12 vols (EN) 21 vols (JP) - ongoing
Forget the waifu wars, Re Zero is so much more. After a slow start this series develops into something truly captivating, as punishing on your emotions as it is on the main character
Monogatari
18 vols (EN) 25 vols (JP), ongoing
Its barely possible to summarise 'gatari in one tweet - it may be famous for its long conversations and mix of philosophy and fanservice, but its genuinely taught me many life lessons and has some of my all time favourite characters
Children of the Whales
14 vols (EN), 16 vols (JP) ongoing
An incredibly overlooked dark shojo series. The main draw here is the exquisitely beautiful art, easily among the best of any manga publishing right now, but the tragedy of the manga’s story also more than holds its’ own
Golden Kamuy
14 vols (EN) 20 vols (JP)
One of the unexpected but deserved hits of manga in the 2010s, this one is packed - with the main story of a bloodier than usual treasure hunt via a detour of food manga. The huge variety of topics and tones makes it a great binge read
Haikyuu
42 vols (close to completion)
I'm not much of a sports manga person, but Haikyuu has captivated me from - from the distinctive art to the lovable cast and the genuine intensity of the matches
Given movie - I liked Given season 1 quite a bit, but I do admit to liking the University students Haruki and Akihiko more than the 2 actual mains, so I’m really looking forward to them taking the spotlight here, even if it seems things are going to go in a dark direction
